Well, WE DID IT!!!!!!!
Barack Obama won the presidency of the United States of America! HELL FUCKIN YES! I remember how intense everything was last night, the minute he got California I went nuts! The entire campus was in an uproar! (Except for a select few haters...to whom I do not know what to say) As a country, America made history last night! Our first African American president! 50 years ago this would not have been possible!
I woke up this morning actually feeling optimistic about the future, with the knowledge that things could change. This election is important to us all! Regardless of skin color, creed, gender or sexuality we all came together and made this happen. I was talking to someone last night (one of the haters, who ironically did not vote..) and she said that some people voted for Obama merely because he was black. While I know that to be true to a degree, can one not also argue that others had the same philosophy when they voted for McCain? Race is a construct, if we allow it to dominate everything, growth is not possible. She also mentioned that this country would go down the shitter after Obama's election. My issue here is simple, regardless of political party/ideology, we will not know anything until it happens. If we only see things in a negative light, we miss out on the bigger picture. We should embrace and rejoice in the fact that America has a chance to redeem itself! With Obama in office, I honestly believe that we can patch up international relations, foreign policy as well as the overall economic situation.
I am glad that young people like myself went to the polls, or filled out absentee ballots! We made history and our votes really made a difference this time!!!!!
We can now say that change is possible in America! One can only hope that we will one day break free from the bonds of racism and oppression that bind us.
